Becoming a volontaire in France: where to start

Becoming a volontaire isn't just "lending a hand": it's a framed commitment, with a status, a set duration and, usually, an allowance. The good news: most schemes are open with no qualification or experience required — what counts is motivation. Here's how to go about it, step by step.

1. Understand what volontariat is

Volontariat sits between volunteering and employment: you commit formally, for a general-interest mission, over a set period, in exchange for an allowance (not a salary) and social protection. If that distinction isn't clear yet, start with understanding volontariat in France: it lays out what separates volontariat from volunteering and from a job.

2. Choose the scheme that fits you

There isn't one volontariat but several. The right choice depends on your age, the time you can give and what you're looking for.

  • Service Civique — for 16–25-year-olds (up to 30 with a disability). 6 to 12 months, at least 24 hours a week, around €620 a month. It's the most common entry point. See requirements, allowance and how to apply.
  • Volunteer firefighter — compatible with studies or a job, with training and hourly allowances. From age 16, recruitment through your department's SDIS.
  • The reserves — the armed forces operational reserve, the gendarmerie, the police, or the civic reserve: a few days a year while keeping your main activity. See firefighters and the reserves: how to get involved.

Still weighing the why more than the how? Read why do a Service Civique.

3. Check the requirements

Each scheme has its own rules, but the same criteria come up often:

  • age (decisive for Service Civique);
  • nationality or legal residence in France;
  • sometimes physical or medical fitness conditions (firefighters, operational reserve);
  • no qualification is generally required.

Take five minutes to check you meet the conditions of your chosen scheme before diving in.

4. Find a mission and apply

Once you've chosen the scheme, it's time to find the mission:

  1. Browse the missions available on volontariat.com, by city and field.
  2. Create your account on the scheme's official platform (for Service Civique, for example).
  3. Apply to the missions that interest you — a short motivation note is usually enough.
  4. Have the interview with the host organisation, then sign your engagement contract.

There's no single "right time": new missions are posted all year round.

And if volontariat isn't for you?

If you'd rather give your time freely, with no fixed commitment, that's volunteering — head to our partner site benevole.com. The two are complementary: many people start with a bit of volunteering before committing more formally.
